Hi! I’m Dawn Cook, aged 54. My family and I live in the lovely cycling county of Shropshire not too far away from the World Heritage site of Ironbridge and the surrounding villages.
In April 2018, I became a British Cycling qualified Breeze Champion, enabling me to lead or assist ladies on rides of up to 50 miles. I then reached Level 2 in October, which means I can now lead/assist on rides from 50-100 miles. I came across Breeze Rides by chance when I was looking to gain some confidence of being out on the road with other liked mind ladies. To cut a long story short, a friend and I decided we needed a challenge to keep fit so we set our sights on doing a triathlon. Unfortunately, she broke her wrist on our first bike ride which left me with a lovely new bike and no cycling buddy.
That’s when I found Breeze, and my whole life has changed for the better. I joined Newport Shropshire Breeze a few weeks later and the Champions were very supportive and encouraging. When it was suggested that I went for the Breeze leadership Course I jumped at the idea. I’ve never looked back as the initiative has enabled me to give something back to the cycling community. Cycling has totally changed my life along with Breeze and Club rides with Newport Shropshire Cycling Club.
2019 is going to be a busy year for me apart from our Breeze Rides. I am doing my first Triathlon in April which I am very excited about, followed by two more after Vélo Birmingham & Midlands. This will be my first time of entering Vélo Birmingham & Midlands so I’m a little bit apprehensive & nervous about the whole thing but I’m hoping that the camaraderie from the other riders will help me along. Also, it’s another first in terms of the distance as I’ve only managed 75 miles previously. I’m hoping with all the extra training I’m able to complete the last 25 miles without too much of a struggle. Roll on May 12th – I can’t wait ….
I think my only tip is to just go out and enjoy yourself. You know your own limitations and everyone there will be focussing on their own goals so just try to have fun!
I can’t wait for Vélo Birmingham & Midlands now and the whole experience of it!
